Whew! Rapids keep their current roster in tact, for now.

I think I speak for all Rapids fans when I say: whew!

Atlanta United and Minnesota United selected five players each from teams across the league, but none from Commerce City. The players exposed by the Rapids were Marc Burch, Bobby Burling, John Berner, Dennis Castillo, Conor Doyle, Jermaine Jones, Sebastien LeToux, Marco Pappa, Juan Ramirez, Sean St. Ledger, Jared Watts, and Mekeil Williams.

Here is the list of players taken today at 2pm EST by the new clubs.

This is the first expansion draft in MLS history in which a Colorado Rapids player was *not* selected by another team.

Many across the MLS world thought that Jared Watts, Bobby Burling, or Marc Burch would likely be taken in the draft, but all were spared the need to pack their bags for a new club. Burgundy Wave took a shot at the reasoning behind exposing Watts. Another theory was proffered by Last Word on Soccer’s Matt Pollard, who suggested that earlier trades this week between Colorado, Atlanta, and Minnesota included undisclosed ‘no-take in the expansion draft’ clauses.

Jared Watts started a career-high 1647 minutes over 18 starts for the burgundy. He formed a solid tandem alongside Axel Sjoberg. Rapids fans that were nervous that he was for certain going to be scooped by Minnesota or Atlanta are certainly relieved.

With the two-stage re-entry draft, waiver draft, free agency, SuperDraft, and transfer window opening in just the next four weeks, today’s expansion draft merely kicks off the beginning of the crazy ‘hot stove season’ for MLS.
