Four players from the Colorado Rapids—Jermaine Jones, Tim Howard, Kevin Doyle, and Micheal Azira—received international call ups for World Cup qualifying matches later this month. I think we all knew that Jermaine Jones would get called up by Jurgen Klinsmann if he was healthy, so that’s no surprise. Hopefully this will just get him more playing time and help him get into shape for the Western Conference Finals against the Seattle Sounders on November 22.
Tim Howard has also been a staple on the squad, even if he hasn’t been starting regularly. Shortly after Howard’s amazing performance shutting down the LA Galaxy’s penalty kicks, it was announced that he would be starting for the USMNT’s hex match vs. Mexico. While Klinsmann’s go-to has been Brad Guzan, Guzan has been a backup in Middlesbrough in the EPL, while Howard has been playing with the Rapids (and playing well).
The USMNT plays Mexico on November 11 at 7:45 pm EST in Columbus, Ohio. The match will be on FS1 and Univision. The team then goes to Costa Rica on November 15th at 9:00 pm EST. It will be shown on beIN SPORTS and NBC Universo.
Earlier this year, Kevin Doyle was left off the Republic of Ireland’s UEFA squad in favor of La Galaxy’s Robbie Keane. But with Keane announcing his international retirement back in August, it should come as no surprise that Doyle has earned a spot in the World Cup qualifiers this time around.
The Republic of Ireland plays Austria on November 12.
Micheal Azira has played for the Uganda team in 2014 in the World Cup qualifier against Senegal, and was also a member of the Olympic squad and the U-20 national team.
Uganda plays Congo on November 12.
The Burgundy Wave wishes all of the guys good luck, and we’ll be cheering you on from Colorado!
