That’s the atmosphere we need! Takeaways from the #COLvLA clincher

New, comments

It was a great afternoon for a big win at DSGP.

MLS: Playoffs-Los Angeles Galaxy at Colorado Rapids Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s just get right to it.

  1. That’s why they’re here. Tim Howard. Shkelzen Gashi. After watching a game where the Colorado Rapids defeated the LA Galaxy on penalties, we see all the more clearly why the Rapids acquired these two players.
  2. Fans made their presence heard. I echo our esteemed editor’s comments: that was the most exciting sporting event I’ve ever seen. Full disclosure: I didn’t make it until the 30th minute, but we made it in time for Gashi’s phenomenal goal from 37 yards out just six minutes later. But even during what many deemed ‘lackluster’ game otherwise, every pass, every tackle, every play mattered. Amazing response. Amazing atmosphere.
  3. ...And so did that disgusting chant! I live in 2016, and I know you do as well. Why, pray tell, does that p*** chant still exist? I know there are moves to substitute it with other words like ‘football,’ but please. We can do better. We have to do better. Enough. Just enough.
  4. DE-FENSE. DE-FENSE. DE-FENSE. The defense only gave up one shot on target. That’s right: with Landon Donovan, Alan Gordon, Robbie Keane, Giovani Dos Santos, and others, that ‘vaunted’ defense only managed one shot on goal in 120 minutes of action.
  5. Jermaine Jones and Sam Cronin brought an edge. I loved it when Cronin challenged Robbie Keane’s flop late in the game. I loved how Jones threw himself into every tackle and challenge. Our Rapids kept fighting and refused to be intimidated. They’ll need that against the Seattle Sounders (in Seattle on Tuesday, 11/22 at 8 pm MT on Fox Sports 1; in Colorado 11/27 at 2 pm MT on ESPN).
  6. Jelle Van Damme should be suspended the first two games of next year. That egregious foul on Dominique Badji was thuggish. And no call! Mark Geiger needed a red card for not issuing a red card on Van Damme. Call me a homer (go ahead, I don’t mind), but it sure seemed like the refs called virtually nothing against LA, but hit the Rapids with all things minor. But the MLS officials need to review Van Damme’s controversial play.

What were some of your takeaways? I’ll say it again: that was the best sporting event I’ve attended and the best atmosphere of which I have been a part. The Rapids face a very talented squad in the Sounders. How do you believe we should square off against them?
