Colorado Rapids at Portland Timbers: Watch at 3 p.m. on ESPN

The Colorado Rapids are pushing for the shield, while the defending MLS Cup Champions are trying to get into the playoffs.

MLS: Portland Timbers at Colorado Rapids Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Rapids are hot off of a three game winning streak as they head into a rainy Oregon to take on the Portland Timbers today. The last time the teams met at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the Rapids won 1-0. That being said, Portland hasn’t won an away game all season, so all 11 of their wins have come at home. They might not be unbeaten at home (ahem, like we are), but it’s still not easy to get a win in Stumptown.

But Pablo Mastroeni has alluded to resting some players today, especially since they will be playing on (wet) turf. Jermaine Jones and Marlon Hairston didn’t even go to Portland. We have heard that JJ has been going all out at practice, so hopefully we will see him for at least a few minutes in Houston. Marly is day-to-day with a quad strain. Bobby Burling was on the bench last week, but is it worth it to put him in today? I guess we will see.

Today will also be a challenge for the Rapids because the Timbers are fighting for a playoff spot. With 41 points, they are sitting in 6th place in the Western Conference. This puts them just under the red line, and just two points behind the 5th place team, Sporting Kansas City.

If the Rapids win today and FC Dallas loses, we will clinch the shield. If the Rapids tie and snag a single point, we clinch a CONCACAF Champions League spot. If either New York team drops points, we also clinch a CONCACAF Champions League spot.

OUT: Marlon Hairston (quad), Jermaine Jones (knee), Dillon Serna (knee),

OUT: Nat Borchers (Achilles)

QUESTIONABLE: Darren Mattocks (hamstring), Gbenga Arokoyo (groin)
