It’s a big night, folks! The Colorado Rapids could clinch a playoff spot with a win or a tie at home. As you all know, the Rapids are unbeaten at home. What you may not know (unless you read the Game Preview or How to Watch) is that the Portland Timbers have not won an away game this season. Portland also had a midweek game down in Guatemala, and many of their starters played.
While the Rapids are hoping to clinch a playoff spot, Portland is fighting to even get in. Sitting below the playoff line in the 7th spot in the Western Conference, with 41 points, the Timbers have only won six of their last 11 MLS matches (though they have won three of their last five if you include Champions League play).
The last time the two teams played was Tim Howard’s debut on the 4th of July, and it resulted in a 0-0 tie. Considering that the Timbers had a match earlier this week, and Colorado is at altitude, I would expect them to go hard in the first 15 to attempt to go up early. If the Rapids can hold them off and score early, the Timbers would have a very difficult time getting back into it.
COLORADO RAPIDS STARTING XI:
Tim Howard; Marc Burch, Axel Sjöberg, Jared Watts, Eric Miller; Sam Cronin, Dillon Powers; Sebastien Le Toux, Shkëlzen Gashi, Marlon Hairston; Dominique Badji
BENCH: Caleb Calvert, Dennis Castillo, Zac MacMath, Marco Pappa, Mekeil Williams
