If you’re like me, you are cautiously optimistic about today. The Colorado Rapids have a chance to clinch a playoff spot, and all they have to do is win or tie*. At home. Against a team that hasn’t won a single away game this season. But that means it could also be the perfect time for the Portland Timbers to roll into town and grab three points.
Let’s hope for the former.
A win for the Rapids today would also bring them up to 51 points, tying the club record. It’s unlikely that we will see Kevin Doyle today, and who knows when Jermaine Jones will be back, so I’m looking forward to seeing the Marlon Hairston/Dominique Badji combo up top again. I’d like to see more shots, too, and not just from Shkelzen Gashi (aka Mr. Goal of the Week).
The Timbers, on the other hand, have lost six of their last 11 matches. Though you can never underestimate the boot of Fanendo Adi or Diego Valeri, Portland did have a midweek game in Guatemala, and many of their usual starters played or subbed.
*I thought it had to be a win, but ColoradoRapids.com says that they could clinch with a win or a tie. Or if the Seattle Sounders win and Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City lose/draw.
QUESTIONABLE: Kevin Doyle (ankle), Jermaine Jones (knee), Bobby Burling (toe) <- even though Burling is listed as questionable by the Rapids, I talked with him on Tuesday and I’m 99.9% sure he won’t be playing tonight.
OUT: Dillon Serna (knee)
QUESTIONABLE: Lucas Melano (groin), Vytautas “Vytas” Andriuškevičius (rib), Darren Mattocks (hamstring)
OUT: Nat Borchers (Achilles)
Colorado: Michael Azira (yellow card accumulation)
