On Saturday evening, the Colorado Rapids will look to gain ground in the Western Conference with the goal of hosting a home playoff game. They will welcome Portland Timbers to Dick’s Sporting goods Park. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. MST and the match will be broadcast on Altitude.
The past few matches have seen the Commerce City side draw but there is still a small chance that the Rapids could win the MLS Supporters’ Shield trophy. Portland are on the cusp of a playoff spot, but do need to get results in order to qualify for the postseason.
Colorado (12-5-12, 48 points) are currently in 2nd place in the Western Conference; however, they are tied on points with LA Galaxy. The Rapids most recently tied Vancouver Whitecaps by a scoreline of 3-3 on the weekend. Shkelzen Gashi had two goals, including a phenomenal free kick curler, but defensive lapses against 10-men Vancouver meant just a share of the spoils in British Columbia.
Portland (11-12-8, 41 points) are confident they can make the playoffs, but the Timbers have not won a road game in the league all season. This is a disturbing statistic for them as the Rapids are unbeaten at home in 2016. Colorado also have the league’s best defensive record when it comes to goals allowed in MLS as well.
The Timbers have not been able to get a clean sheet in the past seven games, giving up 48 goals in 31 games, which is among the worst in the league. Rapids midfielder Michael Azira will not feature in the game today due to being suspended for yellow card accumulation.
