The Labor Day Holiday weekend has come and gone and for us here at Burgundy Wave that means back to work, but for the Charlotte Independence and the Colorado Rapids the work has not ended. And speaking of work, this week is a massive one for both clubs as playoff fortunes could be made or broke this week.
The #OneClub Report:
1) The Rapids Situation: The Rapids have two HUGE games this week including the only home match in the month of September. Tomorrow night the Rapids play at Vancouver Whitecaps and while not technically a must win for the Burgundy Boys, it is darn close. The Rapids are seven points out of a playoff place with a game in hand on the 6th ranked team (Portland Timbers). If the Rapids can win on Wednesday and then pick up all three points at home against D.C. United on Saturday they *could* be within a point. No pressure Lads.
2) The Independence Situation: Charlotte really got lucky on Saturday against a dreadful Wilmington Hammerheads FC team in a 2-2 draw. It is never a good thing when you need a PK in stoppage time to get a result against a team that has won just three games all year. Yes, Charlotte still controls their destiny and if they win out they are in. But with their poor road form (only one win this year) and two of their final three on the road.....Ouch.
3) The #OneClub Schedule: So both clubs have a tough run this week, although Charlotte has it slightly easier--
Rapids at Vancouver--September 9 at 8:00 PM MDT
Rapids vs D.C. United--September 12 at 7:00 PM MDT
Independence vs Toronto FC II--September 9 at 5:00 PM MDT
Independence at Saint Louis FC--September 12 at 6:30 PM MDT
It is a cliche to say that this week will tell us quite a bit, but it is true. If Charlotte can win its two games, they will be hard pressed to not make the playoffs. And if the Rapids can pick up six points this week, they will be in a great spot to make a run in the final month of the season. Regardless, it is a big week for the #OneClub.
