It certainly has not been the best of seasons for the Colorado Rapids in 2015, and while they can still technically qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs, it seems like it will be a task too difficult. But all is not lost for the Rapids as there are still some good that can come out of this season.
Mainly: winning the rivalry battles
The Rapids have been a part of the Rocky Mountain Cup since our neighbors to the West, Real Salt Lake, came into the league in 2005 and this year the Midwestia Championship was started with Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas. And despite results not going our way, we have a shot at two trophies (OK, one is a belt) this year:
The Rocky Mountain Cup
The Rapids currently lead the yearly series with a 1-0-1 record after a 0-0 draw at Rio Tinto in June and a 3-1 victory in July at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The teams will finish up their series on October 4 in Commerce City and the Rapids have a great chance at winning their second Rocky Mountain Cup in three years. If the Rapids win or tie they will bring the Cup home to Colorado. (There are scenarios where the Rapids could lose and keep the cup, but we don't like to talk about that)
The Midwestia Championship
The Rapids are top of the table!
|Points||Games Played||Win||Loss||Draw||Goal Differential|
|Sporting Kansas City||6||4||2||2||0||3|
The Rapids have only one game left against Sporting Kansas City (on October 21 at Sporting Park) and should they win that one, they would take home the first edition of The Midwestia Championship.
So although it has not been the best of campaigns for the Rapids, there is still some good things to look forward to in the final several weeks of the 2015 season.
