The Colorado Rapids will play host to Sporting Kansas City for the first time this season in Colorado on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. The Rocky mountain club has won their past two games, and surprisingly still find themselves with a small chance at making a run at a playoff spot in the West despite being bottom of the conference.
Colorado (7-9-9) are currently 5 points behind the Seattle Sounders, who are in 6th place. The Rapids had a mid-week fixture against Houston Dynamo and won 2-1 over the Texan side. Vicente Sanchez and Brad Davis both scored from the spot in the first half but Kevin Doyle connected on a diving header late in the game and the Rapids held on for the win at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
Sporting (11-6-7) are coming off a 3-2 loss in Columbus on the weekend. After a 3 game winning streak. the Kansas club have lost their past two games by a combined scoreline of 8-2. Peter Vermes will want to get a result as Sporting are in contention for the Supporter's Shield trophy. Benny Feilhaber is also having an MVP-calibre season and could be set for a return to the United States national team.
As August comes to a close, the Colorado Rapids could start to make amends on what has been a poor season [so far]. Pablo Mastroeni has overseen five wins in the Rapids last eight matches. Kevin Doyle has 3 goals since his transfer from Wolves and Dillon Serna and Gaby Torres have been in good form. Defensively, Colorado seem to prefer Maynor Figueroa at left back and Sean St. Ledger as one of the central defenders. Both players arrived just as the MLS transfer window a few weeks ago.
