In the rivalry that is the Rocky Mountain Cup there are very few times when the Colorado Rapids have truly gotten one over on Real Salt Lake. Let's be honest, this rivalry has been firmly in the favor of our friends from Utah, but on this one night in Commerce City, the Rapids were able to get a critical win and maybe, just maybe, give a little hope to this season. The stadium and supporters were electric and the Rapids were led by goals from Drew Moor, Jared Watts, Juan Ramirez and a Man of the Match performance by Charles Eloundou.
A couple of thoughts about this 3-1 victory for the Burgundy Boys:
1) The Formation: For the second match in a row, the Rapids trotted out the 4-3-3 and with it came a bit of success. As in a 3-1 win!!! But seriously, since the Rapids moved to the 4-3-3 they are 2-0-0 and have outscored opponents 5-2. The formation seems to give the Lads more freedom to move and be creative with the ball. The question I have, and this will need to be answered, is do they have the right players in the right place to properly create with this formation.
2) The Stats: Stats are a funny thing in football and usually they don't mean shit, but in this case the stats were spot on as the Rapids led most major statistical categories especially possession and shots on goal. It was shocking that the Rapids were not ahead in this one as they were putting RSL under considerable pressure throughout this match.
3) Changing Perception? Look, the playoffs are a LONG shot at this point, but things may be starting to turn around in Commerce City. This is the first time this year that the Rapids went down a goal and got a victory. Could this be the turning point? Unknown, but for now, the Rapids have two wins on the spin with a challenging game at Century Link against Seattle Sounders on Saturday night.
Enjoy this one Rapids fans. It has been a long time coming.
