2015 Gold Cup: Day Three Review, Day Four Preview

The first set of matches are done in the Group Stage in the 2015 Gold Cup

Mike DiNovo-USA TODAY Sports

Well, if you were looking for goals, day three of the Gold Cup was your huckleberry.  The goal tally hit double digits as both Mexico and Trinidad & Tobago recorded big victories.  Here is the Group C table after the slate of matches tonight:

Points W L D GD
Mexico 3 1 0 0 6
Trinidad & Tobago 3 1 0 0 2
Guatemala 0 0 1 0 -2
Cuba 0 0 1 0 -6

Trinidad & Tobago 3:1 Guatemala

This is quite the misleading score line.  Guatemala had more possession, more passes, better passing accuracy and had the same amount of shots on goal as T&T.  The difference:  T&T was far more clinical in front of goal and the Guatemalan defense was a total disaster.  A great result for T&T which should make qualifying for the knock out rounds a done deal.

Mexico 6:0 Cuba

This one was just brutal to watch.  Yes, Mexico is a good team, but Cuba is a team in turmoil as they deal with six players held up by Visa issues and one defection.  Just.  Yikes.

How to Watch:  Honduras vs Panama

Match Date/Time: Friday, July 10 at 4:00 PM MDT

Venue: Gillette Stadium--Foxborough, Massachusetts

TV Information: Fox Sports 2/UniMas/Univision Deportes

The Road So Far: Honduras--LOSS 1-2 to United States.  Panama--DRAW 1-1 vs Haiti

Thoughts: This is a very big game for Panama and more than likely their last best chance of grabbing a win.  They were held by a Haiti team that made life very difficult for them and if they do not play better they will get run off the pitch by Honduras.  Say what you want about how the United States played against Honduras, but they gave the Stars and Stripes everything they could handle and Honduras is primed to make a run in this tournament.  But they need to get all three points against a beatable Panama team.  And don't forget, Colorado Rapids striker Gabriel Torres is on the Panamanian team.

The Road So Far: United States--WIN 2-1 vs Honduras.  Haiti--DRAW 1-1 vs Panama

Thoughts: It is tough to say if the USA had a bad day at the office or if Honduras is just that team that gives the USA fits.  Bottom line, they got three points and lead their group.  Haiti had a surprise result vs Panama in the first group game and will be looking to duplicate that success in this one.  I think they will bunker back and absorb pressure and try and beat the United States on the counter attack.  The key for the USA will be patience.  The shots will come, just sit back and wait for that chance.  This should be another win for the Good Guys.
