Two struggling sides meet in Houston tonight in the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup as the Colorado Rapids and Houston Dynamo will look win and advance to the Quarterfinals of the Cup. The Dynamo are coming off a 2-0 victory over Austin Aztex on June 17 to book their date against the Rapids who defeated Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 4-1.
Both clubs are having issues in MLS play, and this game represents a terrific opportunity to give the supporters something to cheer about.
The Goal for the Rapids: Just win.
What to Watch For:
1) Something to cheer about: The Rapids are truly a poor side and have struggled in nearly every match this year but the US Open Cup has been one of the few shining moments this year. This may be one of the few chances for a victory this season and to win in Houston would at least give a moment of happiness to a fan base that is truly bummed out about this year.
2) The Reward: A victory for the Rapids will mean a date against the Sporting Kansas City vs FC Dallas match that is being contested on July 1. If the Rapids win they will be on the road again against the Hoops or SKC, and although the road is tough, it is not impossible and there is all to play for if the Rapids want to compete for a trophy.
3) Players Need to Step Up: It is clear that Pablo Mastroeni is not currently Head Coaching material. But ultimately the players need to stand up and be held accountable for the crap-fest that is this season. It is easy to blame Pablo for all of the challenges out there, but ultimately the players need to take a good share of the blame. They have severely under performed and it is not fair to just blame Pablo for this season.
Injuries: Colorado--OUT--Axel Sjoberg and Juan Ramirez. Houston--PROBABLE: Brad Davis

Predicted Starting XI:
Cup matches are always difficult to predict a starting lineup and with the Rapids in the middle of an incredibly busy time with multiple matches a week, it is a best guest of who will play. But here is my predicted Starting XI for the Rapids:
Zac MacMath, Marc Burch, Drew Moor, Shane O'Neill, Michael Harrington, Nick LaBrocca, Marcelo Sarvas, Dillon Serna, Dillon Powers, Vicente Sanchez, Charles Eloundou
