The Colorado Rapids season has not gone according to plan so far, but some terrific news today was announced as Gabriel Torres, the Rapids midfielder/forward was granted a call-up for the Gold Cup for Panama.
For Torres, this truly is a redemption of sorts as his form was quite poor in 2014. However, he came into camp in good shape and has rewarded the faith of the club by contributing four goals and two assists while starting all 15 games for the Rapids. He is leading all outfield players with 1,188 minutes and has been one of the more reliable players in the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, mostly playing in an outside midfield position.
Here is the schedule for Panama and when we might see Torres on the pitch:
July 7--vs Haiti at Toyota Stadium--Frisco, Texas at 5:00 PM MDT
July 10 vs Honduras at Gillette Stadium--Foxborough, Massachusetts at 4:00 PM MDT
July 13 vs United States at Sporting Park--Kansas City, Kansas at 7:30 PM MDT
Should Panama advance from their group they would participate in the Quarterfinals to be held on July 18 or 19 in either Baltimore, Maryland or East Rutherford, New Jersey.
While this is terrific news for Torres, this makes life a bit difficult on the Rapids. With the dates of the Gold Cup, Torres is poised to miss the three matches in July (vs Caps, vs RSL at Seattle) and for a team struggling to score, this is a big blow for the Rapids to lose their leading scorer. That being said, the Rapids should have the depth to cope with this and it is time for other players to stand up and be counted.
All of us here at Burgundy Wave wish Torres the absolute best as he looks to help Panama win the Gold Cup!
