US Open Cup Fifth Round Draw

After some exciting Fourth Round play, both the Rapids and Independence learned their Fifth Round fate today.

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

On Thursday morning, the Colorado Rapids and the Charlotte Independence learned their Fifth Round opponents for the 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.  For the Rapids, they expected to be here after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over USL opponents, and Colorado rival, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.  The road that Charlotte traveled was considerably more difficult, but after their shock 1-0 victory over New England they absolutely deserve to be in the fifth round.

First, here is the geographic breakdown of the Fifth Round of the Cup:

West: LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes, Real Salt Lake

Central: Colorado Rapids, Sporting Kansas City, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo

East: D.C. United, New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union, New York Cosmos

South: Orlando City, Charlotte Independence, Columbus Crew SC, Chicago Fire

This means that the Rapids could have only been drawn to play SKC, FCD or Houston and the Independence could have only been drawn to play OCSC, the Crew or Fire.

All Fifth Round matches will be played on June 30 or July 1

The Rapids will play at Houston against the Dynamo and if they win they would play the winner of SKC/FCD.

The Independence will play Chicago Fire on the road and if they win they play the winner of the Crew vs OCSC in the semifinals.

If you are looking ahead beyond the Fifth Round:

The Quarterfinals are July 21-22

The Semifinals are August 11-12  (if the Rapids progress they would host a semifinal)

The Final will be September 29-30

So what do you think Rapids fans?  Do the Rapids have a chance to advance?  Do the Independence have it in them to pull off another upset?  Let us know in the comment sections below!
