UPSET!!!! Charlotte Defeats New England in US Open Cup

The Charlotte Independence advance to the Fifth Round Proper of the US Open Cup with a 1-0 win

Seriously.

Who saw that coming!  (Actually, I did say Charlotte had a chance, but I digress)

The Charlotte Independence were able to pull off a 1-0 victory over New England Revolution and with that win they advance to the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup.  It was a solid victory for Charlotte and it marks the first time that a lower division side beat an MLS team in 2015:

My thoughts:

1)  That goal: In a word: damn

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Herrera&#39;s goal that lifted <a href="https://twitter.com/CLTIndependence">@CLTIndependence</a> over <a href="https://twitter.com/NERevolution">@NERevolution</a> in US Open Cup. Incredible volley &amp; blast. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/SCtop10?src=hash">#SCtop10</a> <a href="http://t.co/zJIUIjA1xE">pic.twitter.com/zJIUIjA1xE</a></p>&mdash; Chris Kroeger (@Kroeger) <a href="https://twitter.com/Kroeger/status/611346105062834177">June 18, 2015</a></blockquote>

2)  Shape and Organization: these are two things that win games and Charlotte had both in spades in Boston on Wednesday night.  They kept both their shape and stayed very organized which was especially critical as New England searched for an equalizer.

3)  #OneClub Wins:  The Independence victory marks the second win for the #OneClub in the Fourth Round of the US Open Cup after Colorado Rapids knocked off Colorado Springs Switchbacks last night at DSGP.  Both clubs will find out their opponents for the Fifth Round tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM at ussoccer.com, but needless to say, there is happiness in Commerce City and in Charlotte.

The Rapids return to MLS play this Friday at home against FC Dallas at 7:00 PM MDT and the Independence are at home to take on Charleston Battery on Saturday at 5:00 PM MDT
