The Colorado Rapids will look to advance in the US Open Cup against lower-tier opposition as the Colorado Springs Switchbacks will make the trek to the capital on Tuesday evening. The early rounds of the US Open Cup feature regional-based fixtures and MLS clubs enter in the 4th Round of one the oldest sporting tournaments in North America.
The Rapids are in the midst of a terrible run of form in Major League Soccer where the Rocky Mountain club have 2 wins from their first 14 matches. Colorado find themselves at the bottom of the table and a win against the Switchbacks could be a major boost as the club prepares to play FC Dallas in league action on Friday night.
The Colorado Springs Switchbacks are a USL team that plays it's home matches at Sand Creek Stadium. They started in 2014 and are coached by former USA International and Colorado Rapids defender Steve Trittschuh. The USL is sanctioned as a Division III professional league by the U.S. Soccer Federation and former Rapids player Davy Armstrong currently plies his trade for the Switchbacks.
The winner of this game will advance to the 5th Round of the US Open Cup. Teams that progress through the tournament give themselves the opportunity to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League and win a major trophy during the campaign.
