Could The Rapids Lose O'Neill and Serna For Two Weeks For International Duty?

New, 1 comment

Shane O'Neill and Dillon Serna have been fixtures on the USMNT U-23's. The U-23's have a tournament in late May-early June. Could we lose these two players for a bit?

Amongst all of the May The Fourth Be With You talk today, this little nugget of information was probably lost to most soccer fans, but the USMNT U-23's were selected to play in Toulon Tournament scheduled for May 27-June 7:

This is some exciting news for the U-23's as they prepare to qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil.  But for Colorado Rapids fans, this could mean losing some important pieces for a spell.  Both Dillon Serna and Shane O'Neill have played regular roles with the U-23's this year and this tournament would be a perfect opportunity for both players to get playing time and stake their claim to make the trip to Rio.  Looking at the schedule at the end of May to early June, the Rapids could be missing both Serna and O'Neill for the following fixtures:

May 23 vs Vancouver Whitecaps

May 27 at Seattle Sounders

May 30 vs Portland Timbers

June 7 at Real Salt Lake

None of those games are what could be considered a "walk in the park" and the club will need all of its players if it hopes to make a serious run at the playoffs.  But, the opportunity for Serna and O'Neill to participate in this tournament will far outweigh any potential negative that their absence could cause.  Of course, they have not been called up yet, but if they are, it would be great exposure for both them and the Rapids.
