US Open Cup Fourth Round Draw: The Centennial Derby?

The draw for the fourth round proper of the US Open Cup was held on Thursday and fans of professional soccer in Colorado can start dreaming: The Centennial Derby is possible.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The 2015 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Fourth Round draw was held on Thursday afternoon and the Colorado Rapids learned their fate, and quite honestly, it shapes up quite nicely for the Burgundy Boys.  The Rapids will host the fourth round match on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:00 PM MDT against either Real Monarchs (USL) or the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL).

That's right: The Centennial Derby is possible.

(Or at least that is what we are going to call it here at Burgundy Wave)

The Switchbacks FC and Real Monarchs play next Wednesday in Utah to see who will advance to take on the Rapids, but regardless of the opponent, it offers a delicious matchup.  If we get Real Monarchs, it is the USL team of Real Salt Lake, and we all now how we feel about that team.  And if it is the Switchbacks FC, it would mark the return of Davy Armstrong and the first meeting between the two professional franchises in the Centennial State.

The timing of the fourth round match works out well for the Rapids as the last MLS match they will play comes on June 7 at RSL and they play three days after the US Open Cup match against FC Dallas in Colorado.

As for the Charlotte Independence, they play next Wednesday against Carolina RailHawks (NASL) for the right to make the trip north to play New England Revolution in the fourth round.
