#OneClub Report: Nearing The Red Line In Charlotte

A sweet 3-0 victory over Richmond meant that Charlotte is knocking on the playoff door.

It is always fun when you can look at your form in the table and it ends like this:

And for the Charlotte Independence that means sitting just out of the playoff places with a 2-2-2 (8 points) record.  It was a dominating 3-0 performance for our affiliate over the same Richmond Kickers team that beat the Independence last month 3-0 and it was the first loss for Richmond.  And with another tie for Colorado Rapids it meant that the #OneClub had their second consecutive 1-0-1 weekend.

Some thoughts:

1)  Take Chances, Score Goals: For many teams if you take chances on goal, eventually they will go in.  And for the Independence, they were certainly putting shots on frame, but had been unlucky earlier in the year.  In this match they put ten shots on goal and scored three times and they have picked up five goals during this three game unbeaten streak.  And they have erased a -4 GD as well.

2)  Another Clean Sheet: Rapids loanee John Berner put on another stellar performance with his second consecutive clean sheet.  Clean sheets are a function of defense as well and the Independence defense limited the Kickers to just three shots on goal.

3)  Recall Marlon? Marlon Hairston is off to a great start in Charlotte and picked up his first goal of the year in this match.  The playing time is really good for the young midfielder/defender and he is embracing the challenge and opportunity of playing for the Independence.  I would love to see him back in Colorado, but if he getting playing time for Charlotte, that is where he should be.

4)  Rapids Loanees: In addition to Hairston and Berner, Caleb Calvert (1 shot, 20 minutes) and Carlos Alvarez (3 shots, 27 minutes) saw time.  The the appearance of Alvarez, it brings the number to five players (including Charles Eloundou) who have played for Charlotte this year.

For the upcoming week the Rapids travel to take on Sporting Kansas City on Saturday at 6:30 PM MDT and the Independence are away to Harrisburg City to take on the Islanders on Saturday at 5:00 PM MDT.
