The Charlotte Independence take the pitch Saturday night in Charlotte as the play host to Louisville City FC as the Independence make a run at their first victory of the year. For the Independence it has been a season that has not quite gotten off to the start that they were looking for, but a victory against LCFC will go a long way to easing fears that this season is slowing slipping away.
The Goal for the Independence: Bring home 3 points.
The USL Eastern Conference Table
|Louisville City FC||9||5||2||0||3|
|Saint Louis FC||7||5||2||2||1|
|New York Red Bulls II||5||6||1||3||2|
|Harrisburg City Islanders||4||4||1||2||1|
|Toronto FC II||4||5||1||3||1|
What To Watch For:
1) Finishing, Finishing, Finishing: I know, I know I keep talking about this every week, but you cannot win many football matches if you are not putting the ball into the back of the net. Crazy Stat: The Independence are (tied for) 16th in goals in all of USL, but are 7th in shots per game. So they are certainly creating chances, but just unable to convert those chances into goals. Sound familiar Colorado Rapids fans?
2) Meeting Expectations: There has been some solid discussion this week about the Independence and whether or not expectations were too high or too low for the club. I am not sure what the expectations should have been, but this is an expansion team that is still gelling. There were always going to be ups and downs and the roster is still being built, so I am not sure it is quite freak out time in Charlotte. But, as I mentioned, this is an expansion team and in instances like this, the most important thing is to be patient. Results will come. They are five points from a playoff spot with 24 matches to go. Time is on their side.
3) Winless and Unbeaten: Both the Independence and LCFC have zeros in their record. For LCFC they have yet to taste defeat this season and as we know the Independence have yet to win. Charlotte can absolutely can defeat LCFC tonight and get that first win, but for this to happen the Independence will need to put on a very strong defensive effort. LCFC does not concede often (3 GA all year) and the Independence have leaked 8. With the offensive struggles, the defense is going to have to be stout to get the result.
