The Colorado Rapids and FC Dallas battled to a hard fought draw on Friday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in a match that featured a number of yellow cards, a red card, and enough Rapids chances to float a boat. But at the end of the day it ended in a 1-1 draw on a crisp and beautiful Colorado night.
1) Nick LaBrocca cannot be the answer: Look, Nick LaBrocca was the Man of the Match. His movement was solid, he was physical when he needed to be, and he scored the only goal for the Rapids. I have always been a LaBrocca fan for quite a while and I love his play and intensity on the pitch, but the simple truth is this: he cannot be the Lad that scores goals for you.
2) The Defense has to be perfect: The Rapids had a number of chance throughout the night and could not find more than the LaBrocca goal. And with that level of offensive struggles that the Rapids have, it means that the defense has to be perfect. This will never be realistic and they got burned by the single moment of brilliance that FC Dallas had all night.
3) How To Fix It: The Rapids have made some moves to improve the attack, but at the end of the day, it falls on the players that are on the roster. Supporters what to throw down on Pablo Mastroeni, Tim Hinchey and Paul Bravo....I know it is the vogue thing to do, but it is ludicrous. The Rapids players had their chances to score, but they could not convert. This is not on the Front Office, despite how people want to throw it at them. The players on the pitch had a chance to win this game, and they could not. End of Story.
After this match, the Rapids fall to 1-2-4 on the year with 7 points and head out to face New York Red Bulls on Wednesday and follow that up with a trip next Saturday to LA Galaxy. A tough stretch to be sure, but this is when the strength of the squad is tested. Time for the Rapids to show what they are made of.
