In the Saturday 3-1 loss to Seattle Sounders there were a few bright moments from the Colorado Rapids on the pitch. Such as the movement and play from Dillon Powers and the terrific goalkeeping from Clint Irwin. And lest we forget the second goal of the year from Gabriel Torres.
However, Marcelo Sarvas stomping on the nads of Clint Dempsey was not one of them.
On Thursday the MLS Disciplinary Committee suspended Sarvas for two games for the stomp, which is the right decision and consistent with past actions. (Dempsey was suspended two games last year for a ball slap against Toronto FC). I am normally fairly displeased with the actions of the MLS DisCO and have written about it on several occasions. And at first blush I thought this was Dempsey doing his typical whining and bitching that he is famous for.
But after watching the game again and seeing the play, the MLS DisCo gets it right.
Look, I know we have all been there when we take a shot to the twig and berries. I don't need to go through the feeling of it, and to have someone stomp in that area is simply unacceptable. Sarvas, for whatever reason, broke a cardinal rule and stomped on Dempsey. He needed to be suspended and he was. And for his action he will miss matches against FC Dallas and New York Red Bulls. And for a team like the Rapids, who are struggling with stringing results together, a player like Sarvas missing time will hurt the team. The Rapids are playing two of the best teams in the league over the next six days, and Sarvas would have been helpful in those matches.
