Colorado Rapids--A Look Ahead At March

We have a season! And as such, time to look ahead at the three matches in March that await our Burgundy Boys.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

It was pretty touch and go there for a while.  There was great concern that that the season would not start on time, but now that a strike has been averted it's time to look forward and see what the Colorado Rapids have in front of them in March.  As starts of a season goes, the Rapids were dealt a respectable hand, especially when compared to their start in 2014 where they played New York Red Bulls, Sporting Kansas City and Portland Timbers--all of which were playoff teams in 2013.  The Rapids do not face a 2014 playoff team until April.  This should benefit a team that is still gelling and trying to find their identity.

March 7--at Philadelphia Union, 2PM MST

The 2015 season opener has the Rapids on the road to take on the Union.  This is the third time in four years that the Rapids have made the trip to PPL Park and have had some success there.  In 2012 they came away with a 2-1 victory in one of the few games that Pablo Mastroeni played that year and in 2014 they tied 3-3 on a late Deshorn Brown goal.  This will be the first game for Union Head Coach Jim Curtin and this match will pose a formidable challenge for the Rapids.  However, this feels like a match that the Rapids are going to be able to grind out a result and come away with a share of the points.  Prediction Union 2:2 Rapids

March 21--vs New York City FC, 2PM MDT

The home opener for the Rapids will be an interesting test for the Lads.  Ordinarily, a match against an expansion team is one that should be embraced as an opportunity to pick up points.  However, NYCFC is not your ordinary expansion team.  They have a very established coach in Jason Kreiss who has success in this league and an ownership group that has extremely deep pockets.  There is significant talent on this team and will not be an easy match by any stretch of the imagination.  But I believe the Rapids will do enough to get all three points and make the home faithful happy.  Prediction:  Rapids 2:1 NYCFC

March 28--at Houston Dynamo, 6:30 PM MDT

The trip to Houston should feel like a game where the Rapids should be able to get a result and ordinarily I would agree.  However, this trip is going to be tricky.  The Dynamo open with games against Columbus Crew SC, Orlando City SC and LA Galaxy before taking on the Rapids and they have be thinking this is a prime opportunity for points.  The Rapids are going to come into this one brimming with confidence, and will keep this close but give up the game winner late in the match.  There will be goals in this one and should be a great match to watch.  Prediction:  Dynamo 3:2 Rapids

So with two games on the road in March I have the Rapids at (1-1-1) after their first three.  This would be a respectable start to the season and have three of four games at home in April to pick up points.
