Colorado Rapids Sign Ben Newnam

The signing of the defender from Charlotte Independence is truly demonstrating the meaning of #OneClub

Sam Sharpe-USA TODAY Sports

So a bit of a crazy week in Commerce City.  To recap the Colorado Rapids:

1)  Sold Deshorn Brown to Norway

2)  Picked up Transamerica as a Kit sponsor

3)  Signed Kevin Doyle as the third DP in history

4)  Hosted New York City FC in their home opener

Anything else?  YOU BETCHA!

The Rapids announced the signing of defender Ben Newnam from Charlotte Independence.  This move is not unexpected as Newnam had been training with the club for the entirety of the preseason and had shown well.

Some thoughts on this:  This is a bit of a curious move as it does not look like Newnam will get a whole lot of time out there right now.  The defense has players such as Marc Burch, Shane O'Neill, Axel Sjoberg, Drew Moor, Michael Harrington, James Riley, and Bobby Burling.  In addition, Jared Watts and Marlon Hairston could see time on defense.

All of that being said, this is a long season.  There will be at least 35 games (34 MLS and 1 US Open Cup) and the depth will be tested.  Guys will get injured.  Guys will get suspended.  It is the reality of sport.  When thinking of it in that regard, I can see why Newnam was signed.

And with players going to our affiliate in Charlotte (John Berner, Charles Eloundou and Caleb Calvert) and now with Newnam in Burgundy it is really showing what #OneClub means.
