Something that has been taken for granted in every other major sport in the United States is finally here in Major League Soccer and the first class of free agents is pretty good.
An explanation from Major League Soccer as to what a free agent is:
According to the Collective Bargaining Agreement agreed to earlier this year, players who were either out of contract or didn't have their option picked up following the 2015 season and are at least 28 years old and have a minimum of eight years of service in MLS are eligible for free agency
The first question is, are there any players on the free agency list that the Colorado Rapids might be after? And are there any Rapids players that are on the list that we are in danger of losing?
The Free Agent list:
Eric Avila (Orlando City SC)
Brian Carroll (Philadelphia Union)
Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo)
Ned Grabavoy (New York City FC)
Nick LaBrocca (Colorado Rapids)
Jeff Larentowicz (Chicago Fire)
Justin Mapp (Montreal Impact)
Paulo Nagamura (Sporting Kansas City)
Nathan Sturgis (Houston Dynamo)
Chad Barrett (Seattle Sounders)
Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy)
Conor Casey (Philadelphia Union)
Kenny Cooper (Montreal Impact)
Alan Gordon (LA Galaxy)
Mike Magee (Chicago Fire)
At first glance, this list is a bit overwhelming. There are some big, big names that are out there and can sign, well, anywhere. That in itself is pretty exciting.
But if you are the Rapids, do you go after any of these guys? Is there anything on this list that looks worth a look at and potentially signing? Well...The Rapids need help in all areas of the pitch, save for goalkeeper. Thus, the Rapids *could* be in the market for defenders, midfielders and forwards. I would look at:
Drew Moor--sign our Captain and give him back his armband
Bobby Burling--a good player who wants to be in Colorado and, while he may not be the most technically gifted, you know what you are getting from him
Ricardo Clark and Ned Grabavoy--both serviceable midfielders, although their price may be prohibitive. Justin Mapp is also an interesting option here. Good skills on and off the ball, but what will he cost?
Nick LaBrocca--bring him back. He gives his all and you know what you are getting with him.
Conor Casey--I am sentimental when it comes to Casey.
Alan Gordon--Dude kills the Rapids all the time. Which means he would probably suck for the Rapids, but he is the kind of physical, veteran player the Rapids should covet.
So what say you Rapids fans? Is there anyone out there that the Rapids should sign when Free Agency starts at 11AM MST today? Hit us up in the comment section!
