Soccer Dreaming: A Champions Tournament

Come on US Soccer: MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

The boys in green won the USL Title in 2015. Wouldn't it be fun to see them play in a pre-season tournament against MLS and NASL?

So some things about blogging for Burgundy Wave:

1)  You gotsta like the football/soccer.

2)  You probably need a base knowledge of craft beer

3)  Liking craft beer, while important, is not 100% necessary

4)  Be a little bit of a nerd/dork/geek

5)  Have a crazy, wicked and fun imagination

So those are five things that help writing for the site (oh, and having an opinion about the Colorado Rapids helps too) and get you set if you ever come on and write for us.  But what is the most important?

Yep, #5:  Have a crazy, wicked and fun imagination.  See here is the thing: life is way too boring to, well, be boring.  We like to think crazy things and on Sunday night I was thinking about what would be awesome in soccer.

And then it hit me!  A Champions Tournament.

Before you give me any shit about the title, just hear the proposal.  Names are just semantics anyways.

So the modest proposal I have:  Get the three champions of the top three tiers in US Soccer and the US Open Cup tournament and have them play a pre-season friendly tournament.

So in this year it would be:

MLS Cup Champion--Portland Timbers

US Open Cup Champion--Sporting Kansas City

NASL  Champion--New York Cosmos

USL Champion--Rochester Rhinos

It would work like this:

MLS Cup Champion (the 1 seed) vs USL Champion (the 4 seed)

US Open Cup Champion (the 2 seed) vs NASL Champion (the 3 seed)

then the winners advance, etc and play for some sort of cool trophy.

For those who say it can't happen, I say poo on you.  It is pre-season so the teams are still working out kinks and figuring out what they have.  It could be staged in February so it would not impact the regular season.  SURE, there could be complications with where to host, cost considerations, etc.  But who would NOT want this to happen?

And I have to think that the NASL Champion and the USL Champion would LOVE the chance to take on Major League Soccer and see what they can give.

After all, if we can't have promotion/relegation wouldn't something like this be a blast?  And it would have the added benefit and drumming up more support for soccer overall in the USA.

Come on U.S. Soccer, MLS, NASL and USL--Make this happen!  Cause it would be sweet.

Or am I just dreaming?
