The Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced today that they have picked up the option on captain Luke Vercollone's contract.
Vercollone was the first player signed in franchise history and is also the first announced signing for the team for 2016. Vercollone was instrumental in the Switchbacks playoff run in 2015, scoring 14 goals and 9 assists, earning him All-USL First Team honors, as well as a finalist for league MVP.
"I am very excited about the 2016 season with the Switchbacks," said Vercollone in a statement released by the team. "We made a statement last season and look to build off of that success and bring home a title this season. I know we are putting together a strong squad and I am honored to be a part of it."
The announcement comes weeks after Vercollone and fellow 2015 Switchback teammate Miguel Gonzalez trained with the Colorado Rapids. The 33 year old midfielder was drafted by the Columbus Crew, but has spent the vast majority of his career playing in the USL. He spent 2008 - 2014 playing for the Richmond Kickers, making 157 appearances, and scoring 14 goals. In his one year with the Switchbacks, he equaled that in just 25 appearances.
Vercollone is the first announced signing of the 2016 for the Switchbacks.
