The Scott Palguta Memorial Depth Meter--Holiday 2015 Edition

New, 3 comments

As we celebrate the Winter Solstice and the end of 2015, the time felt right to break out the Scott Palguta Memorial Depth Meter.

The Scott Palguta Memorial Depth Meter measures the amount of depth available on the team before we start to see horribly below average replacement players like Scott Palguta making the team. A Palguta Level of 1 is ideal, while a level 4 means we've hit peak Palguta!

Earlier this week I talked a little bit about the Colorado Rapids roster situation and that they had 20 of 28 spots filled going into 2016.  And while much work needs to be done to improve the roster if the team expects to be competitive, I thought it wold be fun to bring back the Scott Palguta Memorial Depth Meter to assess the Rapids depth.

Call it a Christmas gift from Burgundy Wave to you, our loyal readers.

GOALKEEPERS

On the Roster: John Berner, Clint Irwin, Zac MacMath

This is a clear area of strength for the Rapids as they have the Burgundy Wave Player of the Year in Clint Irwin returning as well as a capable starter in MacMath.  And John Berner had a good year for Charlotte Independence as their starter for their inaugural USL season.  Needless to say, this is a strong area for the Rapids.  I might revisit this grade if one of these keepers gets traded, but for now:

Palguta Level:  1

PALGUTA HEAD

DEFENDERS

On the Roster: Marc Burch, Joseph Greenspan, Marlon Hairston, Axel Sjoberg, Sean St. Ledger, Jared Watts.

Make no mistake, this is an area of concern.  There are just six signed defenders with two of them (Sjoberg and Greenspan) coming into their second year in Major League Soccer and two of them (Hairston and Watts) who are converted midfielders.  And only Burch has played significant minutes in Major League Soccer.  This is a young and raw group of defenders and with just six of them this is worrisome.  The Rapids need to sign at least one veteran defender to go with this young core because you do not want to go into the season with a starting back four of Burch, St. Ledger, Sjoberg and Hairston.   All of that being said, there is some talent back here--just not much depth.

Palguta Level:  4

PALGUTA HEAD 4

MIDFIELDERS

On the Roster: Micheal Azira, Sam Cronin, Marco Pappa, Dillon Powers, Juan Ramirez, Marcelo Sarvas, Dillon Serna

As of right now, this is not a terrible area for the Rapids.  They do have some good players in the midfield, but are a bit thin.  Picking up Pappa was a solid bit of business for the Rapids and that will off-set the loss of Vicente Sanchez as chief playmaker for the Rapids.  But, and this is a big but, this rating is based on that Powers is still currently a Rapids player.  Every indication is that he will be sold to Reading FC in January, so my thoughts on things may change after that happens.  The Rapids will need to get more midfield depth, and there are some good, solid and cost effective options out there right now.

Palguta Level:  2

PALGUTA HEAD 2

FORWARDS

On the Roster: Dominique Badji, Caleb Calvert, Kevin Doyle, Luis Solignac

Seven.  That is the only number you need to know from the Rapids forward corps.  Seven.  As in the four forwards that are currently on the roster have scored but seven MLS goals.  That is not good.  Granted, this is a young (in terms of MLS experience) group of players, but this is a clear area of need and one that reaches Peak Palguta pretty easily.  The Rapids need to sign more players up front.  And they need to have a nose for goal.  And while I still want to see Calvert get a real shot at making the team, he will need help.

Palguta Level:  4
