USMNT Confirms Winter Friendlies

The Red, White and Blue will be playing two home games this winter.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The United States Men's National Team confirmed on Tuesday that it will play two home friendlies against Iceland and Canada as it looks to come out strong and erase a middling year in 2015.

The USMNT will play Iceland on January 31 at 1:45 PM MST and Canada on February 5 at 8:15 PM MST.  Both matches will be at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

For the USMNT, these are not your average friendlies as they will be looking to forget a largely disappointing 2015 which saw them finish a shocking fourth in the Gold Cup and lose the CONCACAF Cup to Mexico in October.  But more importantly, these games will be seen as a preparation for 2018 World Cup Qualifying in which the USMNT has two games in March against Guatemala.

The winter friendlies will be preceded by the annual January training camp in Carson which has largely been reserved for domestic based players and that makes one wonder if there are any members of the Colorado Rapids that could be on that team.  One would think that midfielder Dillon Serna would get a look, especially after his run with the U-23 team (and he was called up last year for this camp as well).  The other interesting player that could feature might be Dillon Powers.  But with a possible move to Reading in the English Championship, it is hard to say if he gets the call.

(I will always have a soft spot in my heart for a Clint Irwin call-up, but you know--that will probably not happen)

So Rapids fans do you think there are any other Rapids players deserving of a USMNT call-up?  Let us know in the comment section below!
