Just a few minutes ago it was announced that Colorado Rapids defender Chris Klute was sent to Columbus Crew SC as part of the completed trade that the Rapids and the Crew made yesterday in the Major League Soccer Superdraft. If you remember that the verbiage "future considerations" was used as part of that transaction and as we just learned, Klute is that future consideration.
For many Rapids fans this moves seems like a big shock. It was not that long ago (2013) that Klute was in the conversation for a MLS Best XI nod as a defender and received a call up to the January 2014 USMNT camp in California. But when looking back at his 2014, he certainly regressed. It could be argued that this may have much to do with the coaching change, but players play and coaches coach. Klute was not the same player in 2014 as he was in 2013. He certainly will be missed, but this is something that was coming. With the addition of Bobby Burling and Michael Harrington and returning veterans Marc Burch, Zat Knight, Drew Moor and Shane O'Neill along the back line, playing time was going to be sparse for Klute.
Klute finishes his Rapids career with 57 appearances with 55 of them starts.
What are your thoughts Rapids fans? Are you happy with this move?
EDIT: It's been reported that the trade wasn't just Klute + a draft swap. The Crew also gave up 'significant' allocation money to the Rapids for the trade.
