The Colorado Rapids could have had the 5th overall selection in the draft, but instead had to settle for a later selection in the end. They apparently didn't want to stick around all the way until the 19th overall selection, and decided to make a trade with the Columbus Crew to get the 14th overall pick instead. With that selection, they had plenty of options, and decided to go defensive with Swedish defender Axel Sjoberg.
Sjoberg is an enormous back, towering at 6'7'' and 210 pounds. For a team that desperately needed some size in the back, with all due respect to Zat Knight, Sjoberg presented a fantastic opportunity to add it. We'll see if he's given any chances to get minutes in a deeper Rapids defense than it was last year after the additions of Bobby Burling and Michael Harrington.
The Rapids have one more pick today, the 26th overall selection in the second round of the SuperDraft.
