Colorado Rapids vs. Chivas USA - The good, the bad, the ugly

In a week where the Rapids needed a result, the Rapids put in a terrific performance against Chivas USA. Will it be the springboard the team needs?

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

Friday night was Pablo Mastroeni night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and the team did not disappoint.  Pablo received his honor and then the Colorado Rapids responded with a great 90 minutes that saw the first goal for Nick LaBrocca in a year, a great header from Drew Moor and the return of Gabriel Torres in a Man of the Match performance.

Here is The Good, The Bad, The Ugly--Colorado Rapids, Round 20

The Good--An Honorable Night

There was no secret how the night was going to go, but regardless of the predictability of the night, it was still an emotional evening for the newest inductee to the Rapids Gallery of Honor.  Pablo epitomizes everything that is means to be a Rapid and it was a great to be there to see it happen.  I was at the match when John Spencer was inducted, and although that was fantastic, it just did not compare to seeing Mastroeni get inducted.  I was privileged to be there to see it all.

The Good (Part Two)--A Solid Result

Anything less than a thorough dismantling of Chivas USA would have been unacceptable on a night such as this (or anytime for that matter).  And our Burgundy Boys responded with a great effort, performance and result.  The passing was crisp, the shots were strong and the result was punctuated by three great goals from LaBrocca, Moor and Torres.  Yes, that Torres who has taken so much grief this year.

The Ugly--A Tough Stretch

Make no mistake about it, the Rapids needed this victory.  The defeated a team that they should have and when you look at the next month, it is a tough slog for our boys.  Here is what they are facing:

AT New England Revolution (7/30)

VS Real Salt Lake (8/2)

AT FC Dallas (8/9)

AT DC United (8/17)

VS LA Galaxy (8/20)

AT Seattle Sounders (8/30)

That is a brutal stretch of games, and points are going to be at a premium, but the lads are going to need to buckle down and find a way to grind out results.  Especially on the road.  A 12 point run would be nice to see from the boys.

The Rapids are in New England right now preparing to take on the Revs Wednesday night.  New England is a hurting unit and have dropped eight games in a row and this match has the feeling of a trap game for the Rapids with Real Salt Lake looming this Saturday.  The team has to stay focused and take three points on the road from a team that has all sorts of issues.  Two wins on the bounce going into the Rocky Mountain Cup showdown would make the electric atmosphere of Dick's all that much better this Saturday.
