Wednesday evening will see an occasional mid-week fixture as the Colorado Rapids will do battle with the Chicago Fire at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. With the 2014 FIFA World Cup just over a week away, the Rapids are currently riding a 2-game winning streak. The Chicago Fire have struggled in 2014 and will have their work cut out for them in Commerce City.
Colorado (6-4-3) have been successful at home against Eastern Conference opposition over the past two weeks. The Rapids recorded a 4-1 win over Montreal Impact, and most recently a 3-0 drubbing over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday. Jamaican international DeShorn Brown returned from the national team and scored a brace, while Kamani Hill put in man of the match performance, along with a nifty goal of his own to complete the rout.
Chicago (2-3-7) currently find themselves toward the foot of the Eastern Conference. However, the Windy City club are only three points back from a playoff spot. The Fire most recently shared the spoils with the LA Galaxy after a 1-1 draw on the weekend. Jeff Larentowicz scored a penalty kick, but it was not enough as Landon Donovan scored his third goal in two games for the Galaxy. Last season's MVP, Mike Magee, doesn't look like he will make the match -- the Fire only have two points from four games that he has missed so far this season.
The Rapids will look to continue their high scoring run, after the team has scored 7 goals during the past two matches, while only conceding one in the process. Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin recorded his 5th shutout on the campaign, while DeShorn Brown should be full of confidence as Gaby Torres and Edson Buddle continue to recover from injuries.
