There are some out there who would have you believe that the US Open Cup is not a joke of a competition. To them, I submit Exhibit B: Tonight's match between the Atlanta Silverbacks and Colorado Rapids. (Exhibit A, of course, was the match between Orlando City and the Tampa Bay Rowdies two rounds ago which was not played on a regulation sized field.)
Pablo Mastroeni played a decently strong roster for this one despite having an actual MLS match a few days away, and his Rapids were the better team for the majority of the first 60 minutes, minus a few howlers by the defense and Clint Irwin that allowed Atlanta to get two goals ahead. After that, all hell broke loose, an Atlanta player stomped on Drew Moor, and four players along with a bunch of coaches ended up getting sent off. After that, it was a shooting gallery for the Rapids, but it's still the 2014 Rapids, so no goals came out of it.
Thank goodness we don't have to deal with this competition for another year.
