Prior to this week, the Colorado Rapids were looking forward to their match against Orlando City SC with a possible look ahead at a Rocky Mountain Showdown against Real Salt Lake in the round after that. Now, they'll be guaranteed at least two lower-division matches in a row, as the Atlanta Silverbacks were able to take down RSL in their fourth-round encounter, 2-1.
RSL were the first MLS team to get bounced from this year's competition after making the final last year, a match that they lost against DC United. They were bounced in the first round two years ago by the Minnesota Stars.
This means that the Rapids match against Orlando City will face off against the Silverbacks, with the Rapids getting a chance at two straight Open Cup home games if they can take down the Lions on Tuesday. They lost to that same Lions team last season, but several things have changed since then -- specifically, Steward Ceus is no longer there to lulz up the place -- and it should be interesting to see how the Rapids treat this Open Cup competition with an easier-looking road than normal to the later rounds and a guarantee of less travel to those rounds as well.
