The Colorado Rapids and the San Jose Earthquakes will do battle in the Silicon Valley on Wednesday evening. Buck Shaw Stadium will be the site as the new San Jose Earthquakes stadium is currently under construction and is planned to open in 2015. Both clubs met in April at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and shared the spoils after a 0-0 draw in the rain.
Colorado (4-2-2) are coming off a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy on the weekend. Vicente Sanchez scored the lone goal in the first half after a brilliant chip beat Jaime Penedo. The Rapids were also fortunate that Robbie Keane missed a penalty kick after Drew Moor was adjudged to have fouled Rob Friend. The Irishman completely missed the frame of goal as his shot was wide of Clint Irwin's post.
San Jose (1-3-3) lost in British Columbia this past Saturday to the Vancouver Whitecaps by a scoreline of 3-2. The Earthquakes did themselves no favors by surrendering three goals within the first twenty minutes. Chris Wondolowski added two goals but the Quakes were unable to earn at least a draw against Vancouver.
Colorado will be looking for a result on the road as they do their best to keep pace in a crowded Western Conference. Currently, 14 points would be enough to lead the East, but Seattle and Real Salt Lake lead the way with 19 and 17 points respectively. The Rapids will be without Vicente Sanchez as the Uruguayan suffered a sprained knee while playing against LA Galaxy. It appears that Sanchez will be out 4-6 weeks.
