Happy World Cup month! We're obviously going to have our soccer minds focused on the biggest tournament in the world this June, but there's a few MLS games to get out of the way first for the Colorado Rapids. It's a front-loaded month for the burgundy boys, with an Open Cup game breaking up the gameless stretch mid-month. With a bunch of home games, this should be a month where the Rapids either solidify their playoff hopes or falter like they did two years ago.
Here's the June slate.
June 1st vs. Houston Dynamo - Brad Davis is Houston's Vicente Sanchez -- without him, they've not looked particularly threatening on offense, and impressive rookie Mark Sherrod's season was cut short by a torn ACL. They've got a few other injuries as well, including one to Rapids loanee Tony Cascio. Will Bruin is still always a threat when he's on, but the Dynamo are a very beatable team for a Rapids side that is coming off of a 4-1 win in stride and at home.
BW Prediction: 2-0 Rapids
June 4th vs. Chicago Fire - Quincy Amarikwa is their best striker. Quincy Amarikwa is their best striker. That's all you need to know about how listless the Fire have been for the most part this season. Impressive youngster Harrison Shipp is the truth, but he's the only one on the team that seems to have much of anything going for him this year; their defense has been leaky and past Amarikwa getting some 'right place right time' sorts of poacher's goals, there's nothing much else going for them.
BW Prediction: 1-0 Rapids
June 7th @ FC Dallas - This is the one we've all been waiting for! Oscar Pareja meets his old boys again, but not quite in the blistering hot form that he had hoped from the start of the season. A hot start has fallen by the wayside for Dallas, likely due in part to the loss of Mauro Diaz. They're still a tough squad though, and the Rapids rarely pull points out in Dallas, at least in matches where the opposition doesn't get two red cards. A draw would be good for the Rapids, but I don't know if they can pull it off.
BW Prediction: 2-1 Dallas
June 17th vs. Orlando City SC - Steward Ceus won't be starting in net for the Rapids this time around in the Open Cup, and the Rapids will be at home for the first time in forever. That might be enough to push them into only their second win in Open Cup play in a long time.
BW Prediction: 2-1 Rapids
June 28th vs. Vancouver Whitecaps - Jose Mari is probably not going to score two goals in this one, but home cooking has generally been good to the Rapids against the Whitecaps (July 4th, 2012 aside). That said, this is the best Whitecaps squad that MLS has seen before, so the Rapids might need to escape with a draw.
BW Prediction 1-1 Draw
So this month will be a moderately impressive 2-1-1 with an Open Cup win as well if this comes to pass. What do you all predict for the month of June?
