Rapids Add To Their Defensive Depth

Colorado Rapids continue to add defensive depth with the signing of John Neeskens.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Colorado Rapids today signed Dutch 20 year old John Neeskens to a contract in a move which had seemed to be in the works for many months.  Neeskens is a defender who can play on either side of the field which should help with depth along the back line.  And as he is only 20 it continues the trend of the Rapids getting younger in all positions on the field.

Neeskens has participated in several reserve matches so it is difficult to ascertain how he does amongst first team MLS players, but what is exciting is the Rapids focused push towards younger players who have the energy and desire to prove themselves instead of going after older, retreads.  This is a very positive move by the Rapids and I am curious to see how Neeskens fits in with the group and where he slots in.

The question is how does this impact players such as Marvell Wynne.  Wynne is obviously an older player on the back line and he looked every bit of it after the Chivas USA game.  I am certainly not saying that Neeskens is a like for like replacement for Wynne, but you have to wonder with the Rapids continued focus on youth, where Wynne fits in.

What do you think of the Neeskens move?  Like it?  Hate it?   Share your thoughts below and let us know!
