Player Ratings--Colorado Rapids vs Chivas USA

In an incredibly disappointing display, Colorado Rapids drop a 3-1 decision to (not so much anymore) lowly Chivas USA at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

In a word, shocking.

No one could have predicted or saw that one coming.  Conditions were set up perfectly for Colorado Rapids to have a 4 point week after a hard fought draw in San Jose that saw the Rapids come back and play the Western Conference cellar dwellers in the comfy confines of Dick's Sporting Goods Park.  But, alas, it was not to be and Chivas USA punished the Rapids for the inability to string passes together, the inability to shoot properly, and some horrendous defense.  Chivas USA fully deserved this victory, and many questions are being asked about the Burgundy Boys and more specifically, the squad rotation policy of Pablo Mastroeni.  It will be an interesting week with a trip to Rocky Mountain Cup (and undefeated) rivals Real Salt Lake on tap this Saturday.

There is a whole lot of poor player ratings here and a lot of repetition, especially with the defense.  Here is how I saw the match:

Clint Irwin 5

It is hard to be too critical of Irwin as his defense just completely let him down, but he gave up three goals and that is not a good day as a starting goalkeeper.

Marc Burch 3

There is a theme here with the Rapids defense: You give up three goals to Chivas USA, a team that had been averaging one goal a game.  Simply not good enough.  The Rapids are not an offensive juggernaut, thus their defense needs to be stout.  It was not this past Sunday.

Dillon Serna 5.5

Serna had a couple of nice rips, off target, but seemed to be confused with defensive responsibilities.

Nick LaBrocca 5.5

First off, props on the short sleeves and no gloves for LaBrocca.  He did well keeping possession of the ball, but that possession could not translate into goals.

Jose Mari 6

Did well keeping the ball in the Rapids hands, but not much came from it.  And as a defensive midfielder, Mari needs to hope out more on the back line.  But like all of the Rapids this day, something was off.

Marlon Hairston 5

Not sure Hairston was the best option to start, and played less than an hour before being lifted for Eloundou.  Again, he did help with possession, but possession does not mean goals.

Deshorn Brown 6

Well, a striker scored a goal for the Rapids.  But it was too little too late and Brown looked completely out of sync playing with Mwanga instead of his usually strike partners of Gabriel Torres and Edson Buddle.

Danny Mwanga 4

Mwanga's first start of the year was not one to remember.  He did not look good and was lifted late in the half when it looked like Pablo had thrown in the towel.

Substitutions

Charles Eloundou 5

A half hour shift and nothing to show for it.  Disappointing from Eloundou.  When the Rapids needed some sort of offensive push, he was unable to provide it.

Chris Klute 4

Was on the field for two of the Chivas USA goals....yikes.  And why did he not start again?

Dillon Powers 5

I am unaccustomed to seeing Powers start his night on the bench and if he is healthy he should be a lock to start every match.  He has the ability to make this offense click, and on a match like this, it was sorely lacking.
