Colorado Rapids May Preview - Prepare To Learn A Lot

We're going to learn a lot about this Colorado Rapids team in the month of May. Four crucial Western Conference matches (and one against Montreal) await them.

Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

Had you told me in preseason that the Colorado Rapids would be 3-2-2 at the start of May, I probably would have taken it. Unfortunately, they're coming off of a horrendous loss to the Sounders, and have a tough slate of games coming up in May that they'll need to take advantage of if they want to keep pace in the Western Conference. I've chosen to go the optimistic path with these predictions, but it's impossible to predict with this team still, really, an enigma as Pablo Mastroeni tries to mold them into what he wants to see.

5/3 vs. Los Angeles Galaxy - Colorado went 2-1-0 against the Galaxy last year, but those two wins were helped somewhat by the fact that the Galaxy were missing the Robbie Keane - Landon Donovan tandem for both. They probably both aren't going to miss this match, and the Rapids are coming in on a low. The optimistic view for this one is that the 4-1 slaughtering against the Sounders should force a change or two, and the Rapids should be in their best form for the home crowd. They can sneak the points out here, and the offense has to start doing something eventually; it has too much talent not to.
BW Prediction: 2-1 Rapids win

5/7 @ San Jose Earthquakes - At this point, I'm just going to sit back and accept the fact that the Rapids are never going to beat the Earthquakes again in my lifetime.
BW Prediction: 1-0 Quakes win

5/11 vs. Chivas USA - Wilmer Cabrera's Chivas USA hasn't looked like much of an upgrade from the ones of previous seasons, no matter how much Simon Borg wishes they would be. At home, the Rapids have no excuse, bad form or not, to lose to the Goats.
BW Prediction: 1-0 Rapids win

5/17 @ Real Salt Lake - May 17th looks so very, very far away right now, doesn't it? Ending April on the note that we did, it's hard to know if the Rapids will actually manage to rebound and find some semblance of offense. Even if they do, it's hard to predict a win coming against RSL in the first Rocky Mountain Cup tie, since RSL, draw-happy as they've been, have not lost a game yet this year.
BW Prediction: 2-0 Rapids loss

5/24 vs. Montreal Impact - The Rapids have played the Montreal Impact twice since they joined Major League Soccer, and both matches had the game recap title 'What The Hell Just Happened'. Something about the Impact meeting Oscar Pareja's Rapids made for wild matches, one finishing 3-2 off a miracle goal from Jaime Castrillon that bounced off the top of the crossbar twice, and the second finishing 4-3 after a famous Tony Cascio goal at the death. Those two games were against a Montreal team at mid-table and near the top of the East, meaning this year's affair is likely to be against the lowest-level Impact side the team has faced yet. Making any predictions other than a crazy game regardless of that, however, is probably foolhardy.
BW Prediction: 3-2 Rapids win
