Colorado Rapids Add To Backline Depth By Signing Trialist Thomas Piermayr

The Austrian defender had been on trial with the team for a couple of weeks before signing Wednesday.

Earlier today, it was talked about on Twitter that the Rapids might be close to signing one of their two trialists, John Neeskens. The other defender on trial, it seems, was the one we would actually be hearing about today. The Rapids announced that Austrian defender Thomas Piermayr would be signing with the team, adding another outside presence to a back line currently in need of some.

Piermayr will take up an international spot on the Rapids roster. The 24-year-old has experience in Austria and Norway, and represented the Austrian U-21 National team at one point in his career.

Though the Neeskens signing might still happen before the week is through -- the team does quite clearly need as many bodies in the defensive depth chart as they can get at the moment -- it would seem to me that Piermayr is a more likely starting candidate at left back against the Whitecaps this weekend, with his experience being the key factor over the 20-year-old Dutch trialist.
