Colorado Rapids vs. Sporting Kansas City - Player Ratings

Colorado Rapids dropped a tough home match to Sporting Kansas City in stoppage time which saw the Rapids record drop to 1-1-1 on the year.

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

A gorgeous early Spring Day greeted Colorado Rapids at Dick's Sporting Goods Park as they battled defending MLS Cup Champions Sporting Kansas City. The beautiful weather did not assist the Rapids as they dropped a 2-3 decision to Sporting where the Rapids were led by two (more) penalty kicks by Vicente Sanchez but were again unable to grab a goal from open play.

Here is how I saw the match:

GK: John Berner 6

It is difficult when a keeper gives up three goals to not think they had a bad day, but Berner did well for the bulk of the match and was caught up in some poor communication and poor defense by his back four. That being said, you wonder if Clint Irwin is back in net next Saturday.

DEF: Shane O'Neill 6

O'Neill looked good working up the right side and proved dangerous on attack. Got caught up with the speed of the Sporting attack which proved costly.

DEF: Marvell Wynne 5

Like many of the Rapids on this day, Wynne was just off. And the Red Card was foolish and stupid. And being down a man led to the Sporting goal that won the game.

DEF: Drew Moor 6

Did not have his best game and lost sight of his man in the box on the second goal.

DEF: Marc Burch 4

Injury or not, the lack of speed from Burch killed the Rapids on the first Sporting goal.

MID: Nick LaBrocca 4.5

Yikes. Seemed lost trying to keep up with the Sporting midfield and then there is that whole thing of the missed open net that would have given the Rapids their first goal from open play. LaBrocca has to make that. And he took a needless yellow late in the game.

MID: Jared Watts 7

A very solid debut by the rookie who started in the midfield and then moved to left back to fill in for the injured Burch.

MID: Vicente Sanchez 7.5

Another good game from Sanchez. Two more goals, although both from the spot, gave the Rapids hope on the day.

MID: Dillon Powers 7.5

He plays like someone who has been in the league for a decade and not a few games into his second year. He physical play and understated pace where a bonus and he looked dangerous all day.

MID: Deshorn Brown 5.5

Trying to figure out Brown right now. He had zero shots on goal for the game and seemed to lose a step against the SKC defense. He has one goal this year and in general has not looked all that great.

F: Edson Buddle 6.5

Buddle had a decent game and was a handful for the SKC defense. Had a lovely strike in the first half, but should have had more vision to see the players around him who had better looks at the goal.

Nathan Sturgis 6.5

Sturgis came on when Burch went off injured. He switched with Watts and assumed his familiar central midfielder role. Overall did well, but picked up his first Yellow Card in his first game of the year.

Gabriel Torres N/A

Late game substitution. Have to wonder when he sees the starting XI again.

Marlon Hairston N/A

Late game cameo for the rookie who made his MLS debut.
