Exciting news came out of Commerce City on Thursday as our Beloved Burgundy Boys named Padraig Smith as Sporting Director. Smith comes to the Colorado Rapids from UEFA where he worked in the Financial Analysis Group where he assisted clubs with Financial Fair Play compliance and overall financial performance. He will be working hand in hand with Paul Bravo and will be overseeing the management of the soccer budget and salary cap compliance with the Rapids.
So why is this a big move? Why should we care as fans?
Honestly, I believe this is the first of some major moves for the club. I have been pretty adamant that the club has a plan and that we needed to be patient with the direction that things were going. Bringing in someone with such financial and compliance experience, specifically dealing with budgetary matters in relation to revenue, tells me that the Rapids are getting serious about brining in new players. And with these news players it means that they have a man in place that will help them get the most for their dollar. That should mean no more overpaying for players that are not offering production commensurate with their salaries. This is a brilliant move by the Rapids and I am looking forward to seeing Smith in action.
