Rapids Select Homegrown Player Calvert In Dispersal Draft

The Chivas USA dispersal draft was held today via private teleconference. How did the Rapids do?

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Today was a weird day in Major League Soccer.  There is such a buzz with the conference finals going on, two new clubs entering the league and word that three cities are going to presenting to MLS about why they should be franchise 23.  All very exciting stuff, but then there is the dismantlement of Chivas USA as the Dispersal Draft was held today via private teleconference.  As you know, Colorado Rapids hold the 8th pick in that draft and with that they selected forward Caleb Calvert.

What do we know about Calvert?  He was the first player in Chivas USA signed as a Homegrown Player in 2013 and he celebrated his 18th birthday last month.  Calvert had yet to make an appearance with the Chivas USA first team, but on a Rapids team that struggled to score goals, there are chances he will get playing time either here with the Rapids or with the USL Pro Team Charlotte Independence.

This pick is consistent with the philosophy that the Rapids have had with looking towards youth and Calvert will be the fourth Homegrown Player currently on the roster following Davy Armstrong, Shane O'Neill and Dillon Serna.
