After the news that assistant coach Wilmer Cabrera had departed Colorado to become the new head coach of Chivas USA, the Colorado Rapids announced the hiring of John Metgod (that's pronounced MET-hod) as consultant to the Technical Staff. Metgod most recently worked with English Championship club Derby County as the team's Development Director. He is mainly known for developing players and teaching technical and tactical skills.
As a player, Metgod had a 20-year career and played for multiple teams in the Netherlands, in addition to Real Madrid, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest. He began his coaching career in 1994 as an assistant with Dutch club Feyenoord. He was also the head coach of Rotterdam in 2004.
With the 2014 MLS Superdraft on the horizon, and preseason training commencing in late January, the Rapids will be looking to the advice and experience of the Dutchman. Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo has stated that Metgod has an eye for talent and will assist the club during the MLS Combine and the Superdraft. He'll help to shore up a front office that appears to be losing men fast, with Cabrera out the door and Oscar Pareja expected to be next to go.
