It's been said that the MLS All-Star Game -- OK, every All-Star game in the history of sports -- is more a popularity contest than an actual indicator of who the best players in the league are. Still, it's hard to argue when we hear that there are no Colorado Rapids players on the starting roster for this season's edition.
Here's the roster that MLS released today:
2013 MLS All-Star Gameday Roster
Goalkeeper: Raul Fernández (FC Dallas), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)
Defenders: Corey Ashe (Houston Dynamo), Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City), Tony Beltran (Real Salt Lake), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy), DeAndre Yedlin (Seattle Sounders FC)
Midfielders: Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake), Patrice Bernier (Montreal Impact), Tim Cahill (New York Red Bulls), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo), Will Johnson (Portland Timbers), Mike Magee (Chicago Fire), Graham Zusi(Sporting Kansas City)
Forwards: Marco Di Vaio (Montreal Impact), Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy), Camilo Sanvezzo (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)
Of the players that Colorado actually had in the eligibility race, Dillon Powers was probably the closest to deserving a spot, but he, like just about everyone else on the team, has been streaky this season. Nobody on the roster has a Chris Wondolowski-type following either (he certainly didn't deserve an All-Star berth with the mediocre season he has had) which pretty much had the team's chances of having an All-Star representative doomed from the start.
See you next year, I suppose?
