Just a few weeks ago fans were calling for Atiba Harris to be put on the bench for the likes of Kamani Hill and/or Tony Cascio. Fast-forward to today and Atiba Harris is now the leading scorer for the Colorado Rapids. Harris is quietly becoming the best option for the Rapids. With the help of Edson Buddle’s presence on the pitch Harris is finding more and more opportunities to score.
On Saturday Harris scored his first goal when Marvel Wynne tossed a throw in deep into the box. Harris was covered well by FC Dallas Defender Matt Hedges; yet he was able to create enough separation to get a head on the ball and direct it into the far corner of the net. On the second goal the presence of Edson Buddle and Deshorn Brown left Harris uncovered on the right wing. This allowed Atiba to make a run deep inside the Dallas box and one touch a ball that had been headed forward by Chris Klute.
Now we can all admit that Harris, along with EVERY Rapid player, has struggled finishing this year. But prior to the Rapids game against Chivas USA; Atiba stayed after practice and along with Buddle and Danny Mwanga worked on finishing. That extra work has already showed its benefits. Harris has scored 3 goals in the Rapids last 2 games.
Harris has found himself in great positions to score many times this year, but was unable to finish. With the hard work that he has been putting in maybe Harris can become the go-to guy for the Rapids.
