The 2013 campaign may be young, but the Colorado Rapids are still trying to find their way towards the 'wins' column. The Rapids will hope a home match at Dick's Sporting Goods Park - the venue that hosted the United States narrow 1-0 win over Costa Rica in a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifier on March 22nd, will provide a boost as the club is seeking their first win of the season against the Portland Timbers.
Colorado (0-3-1) are coming off a head-shaking loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on the weekend. The Galaxy played very well but were unable to get past a fantastic Clint Irwin until Drew Moor elbowed Marcelo Sarvas and was eventually given his marching orders. To make matters worse, the foul occurred inside the penalty area and Mike Magee scored the lone goal of the game from the penalty spot to condemn the Rapids to their third defeat of the season.
Portland (0-1-2) are also looking for their first victory in 2013. The Timbers opened the campaign with an entertaining 3-3 home draw against New York but then lost to currently undefeated Montreal Impact at Jeld-Wen Field. Most recently, Portland found a way to secure a valuable away point against rivals Seattle Sounders in a 1-1 draw on March 16th. The Timbers boast one of MLS' most exciting new players in Argentine Diego Valeri. The 26 year old is a Designated Player and is on loan from Argentine side Lanús.
The Rapids also have a mounting injury crisis. Diego Calderon and Pablo Mastroeni went off injured against the Galaxy. Edson Buddle has been making progress and it is possible that the former Galaxy striker will make his debut for the club against Portland. Colorado are hoping for a positive result this weekend as the second leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup is looming on the horizon. Real Salt Lake will be coming to town for another early season matchup in the Rocky Mountain Derby on April 6th.
