Rapids Decline Option On Steward Ceus

Colorado's much maligned third-string 'keeper will not return in 2014.

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

At the end of 2012, lots of people were high on Steward Ceus. He was coming off of two shutouts in the final two games of the season, filling in garbage time games with Matt Pickens hurt. The two shutouts weren't particularly impressive ones, but they were shutouts nonetheless, and Ceus earned himself a new contract with the club.

Unfortunately for Ceus, his preseason saw him regress, he had a horror show of a start against FC Dallas in the first match of the season and was immediately shot down to third string when Clint Irwin came on strong and took the goalkeeper job for good very quickly.

Ceus was not expected to last the off-season, and Colorado announced that Ceus' option has been declined on Saturday.

Ceus will be eligible for the Re-Entry Draft, but I doubt he'll get picked up in that. I fully expect a team in need of depth at the goalkeeper position to take a flyer on him though, since he still does have all of the tools physically to become a good goalkeeper at the MLS level.

And, of course, it's time to start talking about a new third goalkeeper. But that's a story for another day.
